Both models share the same chip and the same camera system. The real decision is size and battery. Every figure below is from Apple's published specifications.

In short: identical internals, a bigger screen and materially longer battery life on the Max. If battery life is the reason you are upgrading at all, that gap is the whole argument for the larger model.

The one change worth understanding: variable aperture
Most year-on-year camera changes are incremental. This one is not. The 48MP Fusion Main camera has a physically variable aperture — it moves between ƒ/1.48 and ƒ/4.0 rather than simulating depth of field in software. A wider opening gathers more light for dim rooms; a narrower one keeps more of the scene sharp. If you photograph seriously, this is the headline feature of the phone. If you mostly shoot daylight snapshots, you will rarely notice it.
Battery is the other genuine jump
Apple rates the 18 Pro Max at up to up to 45 hours video playback (40 hours streamed), up to 30 hours typical use. That is a real improvement — and worth noting for a different reason. In our workshop, "my battery dies by evening" is one of the most common complaints we hear, and on an older phone it is almost never a reason to buy a new one. iPhone Duo — the foldable
Apple's first folding iPhone arrives after the Pro, with pre-orders from 16 October 2026 and availability from 23 October 2026. Confirmed highlights:
- The largest iPhone display ever, in a thin foldable design
- Titanium frame and hinge cover
- 48MP Dual Fusion camera system
- Vapor-cooled A20 Pro chip
- Dual-battery system

What is not confirmed
A lot of what is circulating about the iPhone 18 is speculation presented as fact. These are the questions we are asked most, and the honest status of each:
- Will there be a standard (non-Pro) iPhone 18?
- Apple has not announced one. Nothing on apple.com names a standard iPhone 18, and no release date has been published. Anyone quoting specs or a date for it is repeating speculation, not Apple.
- How repairable is the iPhone 18 Pro?
- Unknown at launch. Independent teardowns and repairability scoring only appear after devices reach customers. We will update this page from our own bench experience once we have actually worked on one.
- How durable is the iPhone Duo folding display?
- Apple describes a titanium frame and hinge cover and says the design is durable. Real-world folding-display longevity cannot be known until the phones have been in daily use for months.

A new Pro is a lot of money. Plenty of the phones brought to our Bhangagarh workshop are replaced not because they are finished, but because one component failed and nobody told the owner it was a single, fixable fault.
