How to Know When Your iPhone Battery Needs Replacement

Gloved hands removing the battery from an opened smartphone

Batteries are the only part of your iPhone that is guaranteed to wear out. The question isn’t whether you’ll need a replacement — it’s recognising when. Here are the signals we tell our Guwahati customers to watch for, in rising order of urgency.

Signal 1: Battery Health at or below 80%

Open Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Apple’s own threshold for a degraded battery is 80% of original capacity — below that, fast drain, unpredictable shutdowns and throttled performance become normal. Between 80–85%, the battery is on final approach; plan the replacement at your convenience rather than waiting for it to strand you.

Signal 2: The phone lies about its charge

A healthy battery reports charge smoothly. A worn one jumps — 45% to 20% in minutes, or dead at 30%. This is the battery’s fuel gauge failing along with its capacity, and it only gets worse.

Signal 3: Shutdowns under load or in cold weather

Camera use, navigation, gaming, or a cool December morning in the hills — moments of high current demand are when a worn battery gives up and the phone hard-shuts. If your iPhone dies specifically during demanding use, the battery can no longer deliver peak current.

Signal 4: The phone got slow

This surprises people: iOS deliberately slows the processor when the battery can’t sustain peak power, to prevent those shutdowns. If your iPhone feels sluggish and the battery is old, the battery is the likely cause — and a replacement removes the throttling. Check for “peak performance capability” messages in Battery Health.

Signal 5 (urgent): Swelling

If your screen is lifting at an edge, the display has a bright pressure spot, or the phone doesn’t sit flat — stop charging it now. A swollen lithium battery is a safety issue, not a performance issue. Don’t press on it, don’t fly with it, don’t keep using it. Bring it in and we’ll remove the cell safely; continued charging makes swollen cells worse and occasionally dangerous.

What replacement looks like

At iFix Guwahati, battery replacement is a same-day repair for most models when stock is available — frequently while you wait. Your data isn’t touched, and we test charging behaviour and health reporting before return. If you’re seeing Signal 5, call ahead (+91 91271 99144) and we’ll prioritise the phone.

Want to make the next battery last longer? The habits that matter are fewer than the internet claims — mainly avoiding heat, avoiding 0% deep discharges, and using decent chargers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many years does an iPhone battery last?
Typically 2–3 years of normal use before capacity drops below 80%. Heavy chargers (multiple full cycles a day) get there faster; light users last longer. It's cycles, not calendar age, that wear the battery.
Should I replace the battery myself with a kit?
We'd advise against it on modern iPhones: adhesive pulls, connector damage and battery punctures are common DIY failures, and a punctured lithium battery is a fire risk. Professional replacement is quick and not expensive relative to the risk.
Does replacing the battery improve performance too?
Often dramatically. iOS slows the processor when a worn battery can't deliver peak current. With a healthy battery fitted, that throttling ends — many customers describe it as getting a new phone.
