The three factors that decide the outcome
1. What was powered when the water got in
Water conducts electricity across circuits that were never meant to connect. A phone that was off when submerged, and stayed off, often has remarkably little damage. A phone that stayed on — or worse, was put on charge while wet — frequently has multiple burned components. This factor matters more than how long the phone was wet.
2. What kind of liquid
Clean rainwater is the gentlest. Sweetened tea, aerated drinks, drain water and salt water leave conductive, corrosive residue that keeps attacking the board long after it “dries”. These phones need faster treatment and more extensive component work.
3. How fast it reached a real bench
Corrosion is progressive. Day one: mineral film on the board. Week one: corroded connector pins and component legs. Month one: eaten-through copper traces. What “repair” involves at each damage level
- Light exposure, caught early: disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning of the board, new seals, function testing. Often the phone needs nothing else.
- Moderate damage: cleaning plus replacement of casualties — commonly the display, battery or charging flex — and repair of corroded connectors.
- Heavy damage: component-level board repair. Shorted power rails traced and cleared, damaged ICs replaced, corroded traces rebuilt. This is microscope work, and it’s where board-level capability separates repair shops from part-swap shops.
When the phone can’t be saved — but the photos can
Sometimes the honest verdict is that the phone isn’t worth rebuilding. That’s not the end of the conversation: because iPhone storage is encrypted against the original board, we can often revive a board temporarily — long enough to boot once and take a complete backup.
