iPads have a talent for quietly falling out of use: charging gets slower, then intermittent, then one day the tablet is a dead slab in a drawer. Most of those iPads are one modest repair from years more service. Here’s how to find out which repair yours needs.
Start with the free checks
- The 30-minute rule. A deeply drained iPad can show nothing for up to half an hour on power. Plug it into a wall adapter and walk away before concluding anything.
- Swap the cable and adapter for known-good ones. iPad cables live hard lives; frayed cores cause slow or intermittent charging long before they look broken.
- Use a real adapter. Laptop USB ports and old 5W phone bricks barely outpace an iPad’s own consumption — the “charges only when off” pattern is often just an underpowered source.
- Inspect the port with a light. Lint and grit compact at the bottom, blocking the connector. This is the single most common cause we see at the counter, and the cheapest to fix.
- Force restart: hold power + a volume button (or power + home on older models) until the Apple logo appears. Software hangs occasionally masquerade as charging faults.
