Every day someone asks us to settle a fight between two quotes: one shop said ₹X “for original”, another said nearly double “for original”. At most one of them is telling the truth — and this guide is how you tell which.
The three real grades
Original panels. Genuine Apple displays, usually “pulls” — recovered intact from other iPhones (trade-ins, back-glass write-offs). Perfect colour, brightness, touch feel. Supply is limited and irregular, which is exactly why genuinely-original quotes are never the cheapest in the market.
High-grade aftermarket OLED. Third-party OLED panels built to match the original spec. The good ones are excellent: proper OLED blacks, strong brightness, accurate touch. This tier is the sweet spot for most repairs — most of the experience at a clearly lower price.
Budget substitutes. Often LCD panels standing in for OLED phones. They light up and they respond — and they’re dimmer, show grey-ish blacks, sit slightly thicker (sometimes proud of the frame), and draw more battery. Legitimate for a phone on a strict budget when sold as what they are.
How the market plays it
The trick is never the grades — it’s the labels. A budget panel sold “as original” pockets the difference, and you discover the truth at the first sunny day (can’t read the screen) or the first battery review (why is it draining?). Defences:
- Make the shop name the grade on the quote and the receipt.
- Compare brightness outdoors at pickup, next to any healthy iPhone.
- Be suspicious of the word “original” attached to the lowest quote you collected. Supply economics don’t work that way.

Choosing for your phone
- Recent / Pro models you’re keeping: best available panel. ProMotion and peak brightness are half of what you paid for.
- Mid-life phones (2–4 years): high-grade aftermarket OLED is usually the rational pick.
- Elderly phones on a budget: a clearly-labelled budget panel can be the right call — for a phone being kept alive, not restored.
